Apartheid Museum

A Life of Fire & Hope

Albertina Sisulu, affectionately known as Mother of the Nation, was a prominent anti-apartheid activist, as were many members of her family. She provided much needed leadership in the 1980s when so many activists, including her husband, Walter Sisulu, were serving life sentences in prison. She played a key role as co-president of the United Democratic Front, a broad coalition of hundreds of organisations, that achieved sustained and unprecedented levels of resistance against the apartheid regime during the 1980s.
